How Synergetic Play Therapy differs from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Synergetic Play Therapy™ (SPT) are two approaches used to support children and families in therapy. While both can be helpful, they work in different ways.
CBT typically focuses on helping children recognize and change unhelpful behaviors by learning new coping skills and problem-solving strategies. It is often structured and skill-based, helping children practice new ways of thinking and responding.
Synergetic Play Therapy™ focuses on what is happening underneath the behavior. Using play as the child’s natural language, SPT works with the child’s nervous system, emotions, and relationships to support regulation and deeper healing.
In simple terms, CBT often works to change behaviors and thought patterns, while Synergetic Play Therapy works to address the underlying emotional and nervous system experiences driving those behaviors.
In the video below, Kelly explains this difference in more detail and how each approach can support children.
How Do You Know Which Approach Is Best for Your Child?
The right therapy approach often depends on your child’s age, developmental stage, and the challenges they are experiencing.
CBT can be helpful for older children and teens who are able to talk about their thoughts and practice specific coping strategies.
Synergetic Play Therapy is often especially effective for younger children because play is their natural language. Instead of asking a child to explain what they’re feeling, the therapist can observe and support emotional processing through play, connection, and nervous system regulation.
Many families also find that a therapist trained in multiple approaches can thoughtfully integrate strategies based on what your child needs.
At Play Therapy Connection, our therapists are trained in Synergetic Play Therapy™, EMDR, SSP, and other trauma-informed approaches, allowing us to tailor care to each child and family.
